How to Prevent Water Pooling on Your Pop-Up Canopy
A properly installed canopy top is designed to remain tight across the frame so rainwater can run off the roof. During heavy downpours, however, water may begin to collect if the canopy fabric is not positioned correctly or does not have enough tension.
Because Rocket Canopy tops are waterproof, water will remain on the surface rather than passing through the fabric. If pooling is allowed to continue, the added weight can place unnecessary strain on the canopy top and frame.
Fortunately, a few simple setup adjustments can help reduce the risk of water collecting on your canopy.
1. Properly Align the Canopy Corners
Before fully extending the frame, check that each corner of the canopy top is positioned correctly.
The stitching where the roof section meets the valance should align with the top of the corresponding frame leg. This alignment helps distribute tension evenly around the perimeter of the canopy.
If a corner is pulled too far in one direction, the canopy top may become loose in another area. This can create low spots where rainwater may begin to collect.
Walk around the canopy after setup and confirm that all four corners are evenly positioned.

2. Secure the Interior Hook-and-Loop Straps
Rocket Canopy tops include hook-and-loop straps along the inside of the valance sections. These straps should be secured around the frame after the canopy has been fully opened.
The straps help pull the fabric into position and provide additional tension along the edges of the roof. Leaving them unsecured can allow the fabric to sag, particularly during prolonged or heavy rain.
Make sure each strap is:
- Wrapped securely around the frame
- Pulled tight enough to support the canopy top
- Fastened evenly around all sides of the canopy
After securing the straps, inspect the roof from both inside and outside the canopy. The fabric should appear smooth and evenly tensioned without noticeable low areas.

3. Check the Canopy Top During Rain
Weather conditions can change quickly, so a canopy should always be monitored while it is set up.
During a heavy downpour, regularly check the roof for signs of sagging or water accumulation. Addressing a small amount of pooling early can help prevent additional water from collecting in the same area.
Never push upward on a large pool of water while standing directly underneath it. The sudden release of water may place additional stress on the fabric or cause the water to fall onto the person below.
4. Lower One Side as an Additional Precaution
During periods of heavy rain, you may temporarily lower the legs on one side of the canopy to create a slight slope.
This adjustment can encourage water to run toward the lower side instead of remaining on the roof. Only make this change when it can be done safely, and continue monitoring the canopy as weather conditions develop.
Lowering one side should be treated as an additional precaution rather than a replacement for properly aligning and tensioning the canopy top.
5. Take the Canopy Down During Severe Weather
Pop-up canopies are temporary outdoor shelters and should not be left unattended during changing or severe weather.
If strong winds, thunderstorms, or other dangerous conditions are expected, the safest option is to take the canopy down before the weather arrives.
Proper installation and regular monitoring can help reduce the risk of water pooling, but no setup adjustment can make a temporary canopy suitable for severe weather.
A Few Minutes of Setup Can Make a Major Difference
Preventing water pooling starts with a properly positioned and tensioned canopy top.
Before using your Rocket Canopy, remember to:
- Align the canopy corners with the frame legs
- Secure every interior hook-and-loop strap
- Check the roof regularly during rainfall
- Lower one side during heavy rain when appropriate
- Take the canopy down if severe weather is expected
These simple steps can help water drain more effectively and protect both your canopy top and frame from unnecessary strain.
